One of the key areas that your local council has a big role in is education and learning. Many different facilities are offered to help supplement learning and education, including schools, libraries, and community centres which run courses. Some of the New careers include the more obvious jobs like becoming a teacher in a primary school, or secondary school or perhaps even a higher education establishment. You might also start up a New career as a librarian – many councils have a number of libraries to maintain and run, and in some of the main cities you can branch into more specialist subjects with experience.

Another more hands on type of job working for the council is a gardener. Council gardeners are necessary all year round and carry out a wide variety of jobs for the local council – it’s not just about cutting the grass! As a gardener for the council you will be supporting in keeping pathways clear of weeds and overhanging branches from trees and bushes if appropriate, but also in many cases they will undertake landscaping work for the council, helping to maintain areas and keep them looking smart for the local communities. The council will also often run their own nurseries with which they give flowers to different projects throughout the community, and they must employ experienced people within these nurseries to get the best quality plants feasible.

Another area largely ran by the council are different leisure facilities within a local community. The council will generally be in charge of the day to day running and maintenance of these facilities, which may include things such as a swimming pool, or a children’s play park, or possibly even a skate park for older children. The local council might also manage the organisation and running of large events, such as a local music festival. These different Careers are all typically extremely challenging and demanding, and require people to take on a great deal of responsibilities. However they are also extremely rewarding and can have a dramatic effect on people’s lives.
